Jove is another name for the god Jupiter. So, the phrase "by Jove," is like saying by god.

    If you translated the Aeneid you would know all the different forms of Juppiter! (I'm using the Latin spelling) but yup, when I read "by Jove" I think 'by Zeus" though x-p
